The Northcote Philosophy

Understand it.

Understanding why something is happening is the first step towards changing it.

Move better.

Your body was designed for movement. Small daily improvements matter.

Stay consistent.

Long-term health is usually the result of small things done repeatedly.

Trust your body again.

Our goal isn’t simply less pain. It’s helping you regain the freedom and confidence to live life well.

Movement and Headaches. Is Movement More Important Than Perfect Posture?

In many cases, yes. Movement is often more important than maintaining perfect posture throughout the day. Your body thrives on variety, regular movement and sensible daily habits rather than remaining in one ideal position for hours at a time.

I suspect this section will surprise some people.

We’ve spent decades talking about posture.

We’ve purchased ergonomic chairs.

We’ve bought standing desks.

We’ve reminded ourselves to sit up straight.

Yet many people continue to experience:

  • headaches
  • neck stiffness
  • upper back discomfort
  • fatigue at the end of the day.

Perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Rather than asking:

“Am I sitting properly?”

I prefer patients to ask:

“How long have I been sitting?”

It’s a subtle difference, but it’s an important one.

Imagine two people.

The first person sits in what most people would describe as perfect posture for four uninterrupted hours.

The second person sits quite normally but stands every thirty minutes, walks to refill their water bottle and spends twenty minutes walking during their lunch break.

Which posture is better?

I’d choose the second person every time.

Healthy tissues love movement.

Your muscles, joints and nervous system were designed to experience change throughout the day.

The Northcote Principle

Your body was designed for movement, not perfection.

Why Does My Neck Love Movement?

Think of movement as nutrition for your body.

Movement helps to:

  • improve circulation
  • maintain joint mobility
  • reduce muscular fatigue
  • improve postural endurance
  • reduce stiffness
  • support healthy recovery
  • improve confidence in movement.

Conversely, prolonged inactivity often encourages:

  • stiffness
  • muscle fatigue
  • reduced mobility
  • poorer movement habits
  • increased physical sensitivity.

Our bodies are remarkably adaptable when we give them opportunities to move.

Unfortunately, modern life doesn’t always make that easy.

Many of us spend:

  • eight or more hours sitting at work
  • additional hours sitting at home
  • significant time looking down at our phones
  • very little time changing position throughout the day.

It’s little wonder that our bodies occasionally begin asking for something different.

Greg’s Clinical Tip – Movement and Headaches

Patients are sometimes disappointed when I don’t prescribe ten different exercises during their first consultation. More often than not, I begin by asking them to move more frequently. Walking remains one of the most underrated forms of exercise we have. Never underestimate what twenty minutes of walking each day can do for your neck, your spine and your overall health.

What Are Movement Snacks?

One of my favourite concepts is something called:

Movement Snacks

Movement snacks are simply one or two minutes of movement performed regularly throughout the day.

They don’t require:

  • expensive equipment
  • gym memberships
  • complicated exercise programmes
  • dramatic lifestyle changes.

Examples include:

  • standing during phone calls
  • walking while listening to a podcast
  • stretching between meetings
  • climbing a flight of stairs
  • parking slightly further away than usual
  • walking around the house while waiting for the kettle to boil
  • (my personal favourite is doing single leg calf raises if I i have to stand and wait for public transport)

They’re simple.

Perhaps that’s why they work so well.

Patients are often surprised that some of our conversations revolve less around treatment and more around helping them develop healthier movement habits.

Small changes performed consistently usually become sustainable changes.

Can Exercise Help Reduce Headaches?

For many people, the answer is yes.

Exercise influences far more than simply muscle strength.

Regular physical activity may positively influence:

  • sleep quality
  • stress levels
  • muscular endurance
  • movement confidence
  • spinal health
  • posture
  • recovery.

Notice something interesting?

Most of these improvements aren’t specific to headaches.

They’re improvements in health.

That’s one of the things I enjoy most about working with patients experiencing spinal pain.

Our conversations usually begin with headaches, back pain or neck discomfort.

They frequently finish with people feeling healthier, moving more confidently and returning to activities they thought they could no longer enjoy.

The goal was never simply:

less pain.

The goal was always:

more life.

Are Standing Desks the Answer?

Standing desks can certainly be helpful. It’s more that it is a positional change that helps rather than anything specifically healthy about standing. It’s the movement.

Standing continuously isn’t necessarily better than sitting continuously.

Once again, movement is usually the missing ingredient.

Think about your day as a series of opportunities to change position.

Time Activity
9am Sit
9:30am Stand
10am Walk for two minutes
10:30am Sit
11am Phone call standing
12pm Twenty-minute walk
1pm Sit
2pm Stretch for one minute
3pm Stand
4pm Walk to refill your water bottle

This isn’t an exercise program.

It’s simply a movement program.

Patients are often relieved when they realise improving their spinal health doesn’t necessarily require dramatic lifestyle changes.

What I Tell My Patients

I don’t ask patients to become perfect. Who is? I simply ask them to become slightly better tomorrow than they were today. Small improvements performed consistently over months and years often produce remarkable results.

Did You Know?

Modern office workers may spend more than half their waking hours sitting. Introducing regular movement breaks throughout the day has been shown to positively influence musculoskeletal health and improve comfort levels for many people.

Myth vs Fact

MYTH

Exercise needs to be difficult to make a difference.

FACT

Walking, stretching and regular movement throughout the day remain some of the simplest and most effective habits you can develop for your long-term health.

Quick Self Assessment – Movement and Headaches

Does Your Body Need More Movement?

Answer YES or NO.

  • Do you spend more than six hours sitting each day?
  • Are you sitting for longer than sixty minutes without moving?
  • Do you regularly feel stiff when standing up?
  • Do your headaches improve after walking?
  • Are you exercising less than three times each week?
  • Do you finish most days feeling physically tired despite sitting all day?

Three or more YES answers suggests your body may simply be asking for more regular movement.

What Should You Do Next?

You don’t need to completely redesign your life tomorrow.

Instead, consider beginning with one or two simple changes.

For example:

  • walk for twenty minutes each day
  • move every thirty to forty-five minutes
  • take your phone calls while standing
  • use the stairs whenever possible
  • stretch for five minutes before bed.

Remember, consistency will always beat perfection.

Today’s Simple Daily

Before tomorrow:

  • Walk for twenty minutes.
  • Move every thirty to forty-five minutes.
  • Take one walking phone call today.
  • Stretch gently for five minutes.
  • Spend less time sitting without interruption.

Small daily improvements matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I move during the day?

Aim to change position every thirty to forty-five minutes whenever possible. This doesn’t need to involve formal exercise. Standing, stretching or taking a short walk are often excellent places to begin. More detailed movement recommendations about how much we should move at any age can be found here.

Is walking good for headaches?

For many people, yes. Walking positively influences muscle tension, mood, sleep, circulation, stress levels and overall health. Regular walking is one of the simplest habits you can develop to support your long-term wellbeing. Just don’t be a maniac. Start 10 – 15 minutes at a time.

Can sitting too much contribute to headaches?

Prolonged sitting may contribute to muscle fatigue, neck stiffness and postural strain. Introducing regular movement breaks throughout the day can often make a significant difference.

Do I need perfect posture?

No. Your body doesn’t require perfection. It generally responds remarkably well to sensible movement habits, consistency and gradual improvements over time.

When should I seek professional advice?

If headaches or neck pain are becoming more frequent, limiting your activities or affecting your quality of life, a comprehensive assessment may help identify the factors contributing to your symptoms.

One Final Thought….

After more than thirty-five years in practice I’ve discovered that our bodies usually ask very little of us.

Move me regularly.

Allow me to recover.

Treat me consistently.

That’s about it.

We’re often searching for complicated answers when our bodies are quietly asking for remarkably simple things.

Walk a little more often.

Sit a little less.

Stretch occasionally.

Sleep well.

Keep moving.

Because long-term health is rarely built through dramatic changes.

It’s usually built through thousands of small decisions repeated over many years.

Don’t underestimate what those small decisions can become.

Small daily improvements really do matter.
