How did l get shoulder pain?

How can shoulder pain present?

There is local shoulder pain that may travel up into the neck, down the arm or even into the shoulder blade. Usually there is some limitation to full movement and certain activities that irritate eg, reaching for the seat belt, putting clothes on the line, using the mouse, sleeping on the involved side.

Elbow pain can be quite a problem. Most people ignore it for a few weeks and hope it will go away and find out that it slowly gets a bit worse.


How did l get elbow pain?

Most elbow pain does not have a clear origin. It creeps up on people without doing too much different from any other week. Most elbow pain that comes in the absence of trauma is a muscle overuse problem which can come from any number of diverse activities including

  • Sports involving hand gripping a bat, club or racquet
  • High repetition occupations that use hand held equipment such as scissors, snips, knives and shovels
  • Low load but long duration events such as using a computer mouse,holding a steering wheel or holding a brushcutter

How can elbow pain present?

The pain can range from low grade to intense and from intermittent to constant in occurrence. It may be local only and sore to the touch but can be a constant ache with pain down the forearm into the wrist and hand.

Grasping cups, holding kettles, taking lids off jars and turning taps and handles can be very painful if not impossible.

How can wrist pain present?

Wrist pain can make it hard to hold objects or even shake someone’s hand. The pain typically stays in the region of the wrist but limits the full range of movement. Prolonged wrist pain slowly moves up into the forearm as the restricted use of the muscles due to wrist pain has an impact on the function of the muscles.

Hand pain

Hand pain is less common than a lot of other joints. Considering how much we use our hand this is rather surprising.


How did l get hand pain?

Some of the common causes of hand pain are;

  • A fall or punch injury
  • Repetitive overuse injury
  • Arthritis particularly of the thumb and last finger joints
